Top 3: #1 Single Biggest Struggle StartupDad Face

  1. Energy
  2. Focus
  3. Funding / Validation

A few answers to Question #1 on the Survey:

  • Managing my energy. A few years ago I would have said time, and as a father of 6, time management is still a daily challenge. But I've found that managing my energy and focus is really the only solution to time. I can separate myself and have all day to tackle ideas, but if my energy is low, it will be largely unproductive. Lack of energy is the hallmark of raising small children, the thing we parents all tend to have in common. If you're like me, you listen to something like The Miracle Morning and think - that's great - I could totally get up at 5am and take an hour or two to myself. And I did... for years. It's really not that hard once you get going and have momentum. But as a parents of young children again, we're often up at 11, 1, 3 and 5am feeding babies or soothing bad dreams. What's lost as a business owner is not necessarily time, but the energy the next day to make the most of the time I've been given. The juice to be creative, create content, and negotiate deals.
  • Knowing when to start working and knowing when to stop. The boundaries get blurred a lot with me. Also, sometimes I just don't "feel like" working and hanging with the fam is a convenient option to help me procrastinate.
  • I am brand new to being an entrepreneur...my biggest challenge is not knowing what I don't know yet or who. Coming from a large company, it was clear who the finance dept was... now I must build my network of talented/honest people to have that relationships with and this will take a lot of time and effort. Before I didn't need to know the tax code, now I need an understanding of it.
  • Focus and balance. There is a spectrum of "outside" influences they weigh on a successful father/husband/CEO. The Dad demands are just a few amongst the many. How do others deal with them effectively?
  • it's probably time and energy. i have a job/career at a global 100 firm. a family with 2 busy kids. it's hard to find time to take care of myself. take care of my relationship with my wife and kids. time to sleep and reboot. ugh.. 3 Ways Entrepreneur Parents Can Reclaim 2 Hours, Daily!

How They Got Started: It all started in late 2003 over a plate of nachos. Scott  and John, were commiserating together over their corporate jobs when the conversation migrated to their new-found passion…their babies. They both just entered the new world of fatherhood and were keenly focused on all the  “gear” they had acquired to care for their children – strollers, car seats, cribs, and of course…the diaper bag. They were frustrated in their quest to find a diaper bag that inspired them. Neither of them wanted to carry mom’s flowery diaper bag, but their search for something masculine and functional was futile. So, as dads are known to do, they decided to fix the problem and set out to design some dad gear.

Scott and John have been best friends for over thirty years and business partners for over 10 years.  Today, our StartupDad duo share a bit about their family life, the story behind their leaps and some key expert advice. Here are some of the key points they share in this episode:

  • The benefits of an LLC
  • Creating a contractual agreement when starting a business with a partner
  • The value and benefits of attending a trade show
  • Growing pains of starting a business while being fathers, husbands and full-time employees
  • Creating a line of distinction between work and family
  • How eating a full meal will give you a boost of energy in the wee hours of the morning pulling those all-nighters
  • The importance of knowing your niche and investing your time in creating your product
  • Why telling everyone in your network about your business can help your business
  • The importance of pricing your product and knowing your market
  • Managing your healthcare as a business owner

There is a story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years.
One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit.
"Such bad luck," they said sympathetically.

"Maybe," the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses.
"How wonderful," the neighbors exclaimed.

"Maybe," replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg.
The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

"Maybe," answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army.
Seeing that the son's leg was broken, they passed him by.
The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

"Maybe," said the farmer.

David Thompson & Startup Dad Headquarters Logo

Today’s Startup Dad Episode "From Leap To Success In 6 Months!” with David Thompson husband and father of 4 (2 foster).

A little bit about David and his WHY: "I was brought up to walk up the corporate ladder to achieve SUCCESS. So, of course, I did. I spent 10 years working very closely with one successful entrepreneur within his company, and I did climb the corporate ladder, and did achieve much SUCCESS. But I realized that I didn't want to commute 2 hours a day to make an above average wage. I believed that I could do that myself, by living out my God-given purpose and passion, which is Financial Advising.

So, after putting it off for two years, I took pen to paper 2 years ago, wrote out what SUCCESS was to me, took a class to help me understand my purpose, and how to attain it, and then made a plan to make it happen.  And last October, I left a VERY stable career in Human Resources to help people attain financial happiness. And today, my business is beginning to take-off, and I'm excited to see where God takes us, but one of the greatest assets to this lifestyle has been the ability to take and pickup my kids from daycare, instead of dropping them off at daycare at 7am, and not seeing them until 6pm.

To me, I am already 'living the good life'.  And, 6 months from now, a year from now, 3 years from now, life gets better...the wife quits her full-time job, etc."

"…I was once 22 I didn’t do it. After graduate school I was 28, I didn’t do it. I got married, I didn’t do it. But now my son is about to be born and I thought to myself this is it! I lost my chance because I was too comfortable. And if I couldn’t do it as a young guy out of college, someone who just finished graduate school, how could I do it as a father.” by Jia Jiang

Jia is the founder of the popular blog and video series 100 Days of Rejection. A native of Beijing, China, Jia came to the U.S. as a teenager to pursue his dream of becoming the next Bill Gates. But despite early success in the corporate world, his first attempt to pursue his entrepreneurial dream ended in rejection. Jia was crushed, and spiraled into a period of deep self doubt. Thus was born his "100 days of rejection" experiment, during which he willfully sought rejection on a daily basis --from requesting a lesson in sales from a car salesman which resulted in a no, to his famous request to get Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the shape of Olympic rings which resulted in a yes, with a viral video - over 5 Million to prove it. Jia’s story has been covered by dozens of news outlets, including Bloomberg Businessweek, Yahoo News, the Huffington Post, Forbes, Inc.com, MTV, and many more… Jiang holds an MBA from Duke University and a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brigham Young University.
